- Check your school's website. There may be a community where students can buy and sell their textbooks to other students. This way, you'll get a killer deal both buying and selling books because bookstore textbook buy backs only give you about half of what they'll sell them for.
- If you're planning on selling back your books, don't highlight! Many students don't like highlighting so they probably won't buy them back.
- Wait until you go to class before buying textbooks as some profs will say that you don't need a textbook that the library had listed under required books for the course.

HTSUS- Differences between High School and University
1) You don't know your profs- You know how in high school, after the first week the teacher knows all of your names? Ya in university, that doesn't happen. Profs don't know who you are. They teach over 1000 students each semester.
2) Class time- In university you're in class only, on average, around 15 hours a week where as in high school you're in class around 30 hours a week. However, this doesn't mean less work as you spend around the same amount of time out of class working on school work as you do in class. SO, when people say it's more work in university and some say it's the same, they're both right. You just spend more time doing work on your own.
3) You adults- in high school, teachers baby you. Not in university. Don't be surprised to see 40 year olds in some of your classes (I've even seen 70 year olds!). That's because university is an institute of high learning. The people who go there are going there not because they have to, like in high school, they're going because they actually want to be there.

How to Survive University Series- FIRST WEEK OF CLASSES
-> Try to get to know people. It helps!
-> Do the readings before class. Just trust me on this one!
-> Get a large whiteboard calendar (most schools have them in their bookstore) and write out all of your assignments for the semester on it. Most profs will give you the due dates all at the first lecture.
-> Check your school email. This is how the school will tell you about events and important info. During o-week you will probably get up to 5 emails a day!
-> go to o-week events. This is the prime time for getting to know people because that's what everyone is doing! Take advantage because later on, people just want to stick with their own group. (also make an effort to get to know people from other dorms because if you're in the same dorm you have a greater chance of meeting but if they're from a different dorm, this may be the only time you'll cross paths!)
-> check to see if your seminars or labs are running this week. Many profs will cancel them for o-week so go on the course website and see.
Have fun! :)

How to Survive University Series- THE FIRST NIGHT IN THE DORMS
The first night away from home is going to be emotional whether you like it or not. For me the best tip I can give you (from someone who cried herself to sleep her first night) is to turn the lights off! I don't know why I thought that keeping them on would make me feel better but it didn't. The second night I decided to just turn them off and I'm so glad I did! The lighting in dorms is fluorescent bulbs that buzz. Just terrible! So keeping them off just makes the whole experience a lot better. Try opening your window, also.
And remember, the first night is the only one that will be like that. I literally cried for hours my first night in rez but by the second night, I was fine! Just relax, breathe, and remember, it sucks for everyone whether they admit it or not!
